Making Time: Life is Short

We are all running out of time on this planet.

For the unbeliever, that can be an uncomfortable statement. For those who follow and

trust in Jesus Christ, that statement ushers in the reality of the limitations of earth, and the permanence of eternity with God. We have one shot at this life: no second chances. This begs the question, and topic of today's blog: what will you make time for during your life?

James 4:14

"whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away." (NKJV).

Psalm 103: 15-16

"As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, And its place remembers it no more." (NKJV).

The bible is clear regarding the fact that humans are not meant to live forever on this planet. When sin entered the world, the curse of death became a reality that each human is faced with. We see loved ones, friends, neighbors, even strangers on the news die each day. Knowing this, isn't it so important that we acknowledge the fact of our mortality, but we don't fear it! This doesn't mean we can simply coast along and wait for the reward of heaven! There is work to be done during our time here as believers on mission for God.

Matthew 28:18-20

"And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen." (NKJV).

Colossians 3:17

"And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." (NKJV).

The great commission is a prime example of the mission each believer has, as commanded by Jesus. To reiterate what was stated above, we can't just fly through life and wait for eternity with Jesus! There is work to be done, and each of us have a calling. Although each individual's calling may be slightly different, they are all rooted in the idea of spreading the knowledge and love of God.

If we know that we have an allotted time on earth, we are each called to make disciples, and our purpose is to give the glory to God, we can move deeper into self-reflection through a couple of questions. How will you spend your time? What will you make time for? Each of us has a choice in life to make time for what they value. If we value relationships, we will make time for our relationships. If we value sports, we will block off time to catch the game. If we value sleep, we won't set an alarm on Saturday morning!

What does life look like when our highest value is God? Will we block off time to pray? Will we prioritize worship in community? Will we make it to student gatherings at church each week? Will we have the courage to boldly share Jesus to those around us?
